It's Ok to be Not Ok: Interview Advice
  by Gregg Dourgarian
pinocchioDavid J. Edmondson, CEO of Radio Shack, was fired in 2006 for lying on his resume. He claimed to have two college degrees when in fact he had none.

I don't keep a resume but if I did I think it would be hard not to have a few little lies scattered about. That was certainly the case when I prepared my first resume after college.

I had put "Conversant in Spanish" on it even though "Habla ingles?" was about the extent of what I had learned conducting interviews for my Dad's temp service in Sacramento.

I paid dearly for that little lie - almost. On a job interview in San Francisco, the hiring manager met me at the door and started speaking Spanish to me from the get-go. I didn't understand much but I did get that we were going to a bar to play backgammon and talk.

One good thing about not being able to talk is that you have to listen, and listen is what I did.  After a few games and a beer it occurred to me that the guy really liked to hear himself talk in Spanish.  He wanted to prove to me that his Spanish was really good!

"I have to be honest," I told him in English.  "Your Spanish is way too good for me.  Can we speak English now?"

He beamed with pride.  He was better than I was.  He was ok in Spanish, I wasn't.  And I got an offer letter the next week.

As for that Radio Shack CEO, he had no easy recovery from his lie.  But he made things worse by trying to be ok.  He retreated from one lie to another, saying at one point that he did have a degree just not a 4-year degree, which also turned out to be untrue.

The best among us shames the devil seven times a day.  If you get caught, don't get defensive.

It's ok to be not ok.

Outsourcing Makes Sense, Outsourcing to Outsourcers Could Spell Disaster

By Jack Terrana, VP TempWorks Venture
I have been around the payroll funding business for close to 15 years.  My first job was with a one-time market leader who, at the time had no idea that they would one day be seen as a ONE-TIME market leader.  Their service was good, not perfect.  Their people were dedicated and professional and more than adequately met the demands of the customers.  But like an engine losing oil, when the damage is done, it's really done.

At the time, a big selling point was "nothing is outsourced" and it was a strong selling point in 1995.  Hard to believe it still is in 2010!!  Harder to believe that the majority of the payroll funding companies still outsource the very functions that busy staffing professionals turn to them for.  Outsourcing to an outsourcer that you don't control could spell disaster for your business.  How?  Let us count the ways.

This article has been sitting in my craw for almost 10 years, when I departed the "nothing is outsourced" shop for an "everything is outsourced" shop.  So in the new scenario, I would sell the funding and back office services to the client.  Here's where you need the whiteboard to follow along.  The funding co would provide the money for payroll that they would send to the staffing firm.  The staffing firm would move the money from operating account to payroll account (no wires were allowed to go to the payroll account) where ADP would draft it.  Simple right?  No.  I haven't yet mentioned the staffing software company that had a relationship with the funder and ADP.   Confused yet?   .

Ok so to recap, fundco lends money to staffco, payrollco drafts money and cuts checks.  Where's softwareco?  Not sure.  They are providing software that tracks applicants, searches and retrieves data, parses resumes, a CRM, an ATS, all of the above.  So, applicant (think payroll) and client (think billing/collections) data goes into the software yet all payroll and systems outside of the software and operating system control billing and collections.  Think this is painful to read? Writing it is pretty miserable too. But neither is as bad as having to actually run your staffing company in this triple vendor hell of a nightmare.

So, without further adieu (read boring techspeak), I give you simplicity.  Easy to follow, easy to comprehend and even easier to operate (and scale) your growing staffing company.

Image6

Before you choose a funding company, ask the easy question, do you outsource any of this?  Do you own/maintain/support the operating system?  Do you keep separate agings?  Is the payroll and other key data accessible from a single system?  The answer should be "yes". If it isn't, that company is operating as it had 10 years ago.

TempWorks DocCenter: How Your Company Can Move Towards "Green Employment".

logoAn inside interview with TempWorks DocCenter Guru, Brandon Johnson.
(conversation with Andrew Bomett)

Andrew: Brandon, I know that you are very conscious about the environment in general. Can you share with us your personal contribution to a greener world?

Brandon: I would love to! Since my wife and I bought our house back in '08, we have been a lot more conscious about what we do to help the environment. Some of which actions include: recycling trash, using a programmable thermostat, and also switching our entire house to use the CFL (compact fluorescent light bulbs) lights instead of the standard filament bulbs.

Andrew: Tell us what you do at TempWorks?

Brandon: My role at TempWorks has always been to help wherever I can. Currently I am in charge of developing, scoping, and also installing our e-document solution called DocCenter for our clients. On top of that, I assist in WebCenter anytime I can offer a lending hand.

Andrew: Tell us about DocCenter, the resources you have for prospective clients, and how they can find them?

Brandon: The current version of DocCenter houses a lot of great features. Some of the features have been in the system since the beginning and others are new. Since the beginning, we've provided features like the ability to attach any image or PDF to any form, multi-mode approval environment for the service representatives, and allowing employees to login using a combination of either their SSN and Pin or their WebCenter credentials. Some of the newest features include dynamic menus for any field on a form, saving forms to an external location (ex. file system), Import/Export of DocCenter settings for administrators that need to install DocCenter on multiple computers, and static form field values via a configuration file.

Andrew: There has been a lot of chatter about Tempworks eliminating the paperwork involved in the staffing industry and essentially contributing to the green initiative. As a Developer, where do you see the future of DocCenter?

Brandon: My vision for DocCenter is to move all of our clients away from paper as much as possible. If I had to estimate a percentage of the company's paperwork that could be stored in an e-file environment, I would say almost 100% could be submitted and stored electronically. Since the re-birth of DocCenter, it has undergone a bit of a facelift.

My #1 goal is to make the DocCenter experience one that leaves our clients feeling completely satisfied through personalized customer service and product experience.

Andrew: Developers haven't been known to be fond of the business side of things. Can you articulate to me how the use of DocCenter to eliminate employment paperwork will add value to the environment while creating higher revenue for a staffing company?

Brandon: There are so many things to benefit from the "going green" model. From a standard business model, we all know that paper is clutter in its own way. "Going green" from a staffing company's perspective is a smart move because it creates a leaner budget. The ability to eliminate file cabinets, cutting the cost of paper goes nearly out the window, save on printing costs, and overall creating efficiency. No more shuffling through papers to dig out employment forms. No more standing by the fax to receive confidential employment forms. No more printer cartridges and toners. The list is endless. Consequently, the productivity level in the office increases due to the elimination of old processes that are done manually. All this can be achieved by using DocCenter as a portal for all the employee documents.

Andrew: Do you feel that the staffing industry is ready to embrace the paperless or "green employment" initiative that you are envisioning with DocCenter?

Brandon: My vision for DocCenter is an exciting one for me, mainly because the more clients that get to utilize this tool, the more we get to hear suggestions on how to improve it. I think more than ever we need to harness the tools that we have readily available to us, DocCenter being one of them. To me, it just makes the most sense. Anything can be made electronic, look at history. We have converted everyday jobs to computers; imagine what we can do in the future with DocCenter as a standardized business step. Even better, imagine eliminating paper all together, consequently saving trees!

Andrew: If you were talking to the owner of a staffing company; how would you explain the implemention cost and process of DocCenter?

Brandon: The initial startup cost of DocCenter has significantly decreased due to improvements in the form creation side of DocCenter. Here's a little DocCenter history fact for you: about a year ago it took about eight to nine hours to create a single form. Today, that same amount of time allocation will produce eight to ten forms - a heck of an evolution! Upgrading current clients to newer versions can take anywhere from five minutes to as long as forty five minutes. The only reason for that, is that it really depends on what version they are coming from and how many things have been changed up to that point in the database. For the future of DocCenter, I can only imagine that things will continue to get better and cheaper all around for our clients. That's the part I can't wait for.

Andrew: Brandon, it's been nice talking "green" with you. I look forward to a greener environment as well as talking with you in the near future about your progress; any last words?

Brandon: I encourage everyone to set up a free demo and see for yourself how easy it is to use. On top of that, I challenge you to find a way that the DocCenter suite wouldn't fit into your business model. DocCenter is the next step, a new wave into paperless. Do you see the vision?

TempWorks Releases Sales App for iphone

TempWorks Recruitment for the iPhoneSaint Paul, Minn., October 30, 2009-TempWorks Software launched an iphone application this week that turns the iconic device into both a recruitment and sales platform.

The most utilized feature gives sales professionals quick access to contacts and messages, allowing them to walk into client meetings well prepared and log meeting notes with action items during and after the meetings.

Recruiters are also able to view their action items, including a hot-list of candidates and a placement pipeline.  All the data synchronizes in real-time with the TempWorks enterprise database that everyone in the organization from support personnel to back-office staff can access.

Based on Microsoft's MVC application architecture, the product also supports devices ranging from the PalmPre to the new Google Android.  TempWorks has been providing mobile applications since 2003 to staffing companies like Manpower, Select Staffing, and Michael Page.  Previous versions of the mobile systems used text that displays plainly on the older smart phone devices.

TempWorks CTO, Paul Czywczynski comments, "For many years the TempWorks Mobile product has been very successful with people on the go, who want quick access to their TempWorks data. With the arrival of the iPhone, HTC handsets, Android, and Palm Pre phones, we are able to do so much more."

David Dourgarian, President of TempWorks, commented on the adaptability of the platform to new devices.  "The mobile landscape is evolving rapidly, and our clients want the best app for each new generation of devices.  Our MVC platform does just that.  Whether you choose iphone or Android or the next great device to come along, we'll have an interface that leverages the best of that device."

Mark Baratto, EVP with TempWorks, focused on how the new mobile technology is impacting staffing sales performance.   "Preparation is everything when it comes to creating trust, and one reason our clients have done well throughout the recession is that tools like TempWorks Mobile have kept their sales team prepared and effective."
